I don’t know about you, but I have a few unfinished projects hanging about the place. And yet, here I am starting something new: I’m sitting in my unfinished house, writing a blog for my unfinished website.

It’s pretty easy to dodge starting a new thing because the last one isn’t finished yet. But if I used that as an excuse, I’d never start anything new at all. Just a few of the unfinished things on my list at the moment are:

  • my house (the living room still has a concrete floor and unlined ceilings and where the front wall should be is covered in shadecloth while we decide what to do with it)
  • my business plan, which I had hoped to have finished by the end of August – and here it is mid-September already…
  • the handbag I started making for myself in January (it might have to wait until next January, but I’m ok with that…)
  • the lighthouse fabric I started designing about two months ago
  • Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which keeps getting bumped down my reading list by the pile of other books on my bedside table
  • the couture sewing class I started on Craftsy a few months ago
  • the application I am writing for a casual stall at a local market I want to try out.

Obviously, some of these – like the house – are long term projects that I have to accept will take a long time. Others I really need to get onto right away – like that market application. The need to earn money to pay the bills while I work on building up my business has a habit of getting in the way. Which is why I need to finish that business plan – so I have a clear idea of how I’m going to get from here (eking out a living) to there (having a successful creative business).

Last night I went to bed early and read Tara Frey’s book Blogging for Bliss from cover to cover. She inspired me to make a beginning – however humble that might be. So here I am, among all the unfinished beginnings, making a new beginning. If nothing else, I will be making a record of my progress along an unknown path. Along the way I plan to share stories, things that have worked for me – hot tips from courses or books or things I simply worked out through trial and error, tutorials on how to make stuff and whatever else seems appropriate, relevant or fun.

I have a feeling that Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is going to have to wait a little longer but I’m feeling pretty Zen about that. I’ve just finished my first blog, which is proof that things really do get finished around here.
